In the 16th minute, Elia Coco hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 24th minute, Jean-Baptiste Fofana ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Anatole Cipriani was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-2. After a rather tough play, Bordeaux's Jean-Baptiste Fofana got a free kick in the 35th minute. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Karim Pflieger during the 38th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Karim Pflieger hit a great freekick 38 minutes into the match. The referee ignored Minnesota United FC's protests and gave Christian Zimmermann a yellow card for diving instead. After 42 played minutes Bordeaux got a freekick which was hit by Adrien Peixoto. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

An unexpectedly hard shot by Jean-Baptiste Fofana in the 71st minute of play forced Minnesota United FC's goalkeeper Anatole Cipriani to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 75th minute, Minnesota United FC's Raymond Horel seemed to kick out at an opponent. The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed Raymond Horel the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of Minnesota United FC protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Raymond Horel had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. In the 76th minute, Raymond Horel hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jean-Baptiste Fofana in the 80th minute of play forced Minnesota United FC's goalkeeper Anatole Cipriani to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Anatole Cipriani took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Xavier Bertolotti, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Anatole Cipriani showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jean-François Martz in the 85th minute of the match. Bordeaux played a much better game than Minnesota United FC and deserved their victory. The Minnesota United FC players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
