The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. After some fancy dribbling in the 7th minute, Eduard Siegert managed to get in a good position for a shot. 1.FC Union Berlin's supporters rose to their feet, but Eduard Siegert was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Malte Kleist breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. If Eduard Siegert had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 13th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Eduard Siegert received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 14th minute. Malte Kleist tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When Rudolf Roese came up free with the goalie in the 16th minute, the 1.FC Union Berlin fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Rudolf Roese couldn't finish the play. 31 minutes into the match, 1.FC Union Berlin's goalkeeper Michael Schraier had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Richard Deimann. In the 32nd minute Wolf Szymczakowski shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Malte Kleist saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 39th minute, Rudolf Roese got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. 46 minutes into the match, Richard Deimann notched a goal, 1-0, to the right of 1.FC Union Berlin's Michael Schraier. Michael Schraier was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 1-0.

The wind increased when Claus Strohfeldt made the kick off in the second half. Wolf Szymczakowski might have been able to make a better finish in the 54th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Malte Kleist. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Wolf Szymczakowski ran back to his position shaking his head. 1.FC Union Berlin's Michael Schraier played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Richard Deimann in the 60th minute of play. After 61 played minutes 1.FC Union Berlin got a freekick which was hit by Gerard Hunold. The crowd rose to their feet as 1.FC Union Berlin's Rudolf Roese slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Malte Kleist. That made the score 1-1 after 74 minutes of play. 1.FC Union Berlin's Michael Schraier played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Richard Deimann in the 78th minute of play. Wolf Szymczakowski's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Malte Kleist read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 84th minute of play. Claus Strohfeldt kicked well hit freekick during the 89th minute of the match. Rudolf Roese blasted a shot towards the goal in the 92nd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Malte Kleist having to make a save. A collision led to 1.FC Union Berlin getting a freekick after 93 minutes play. Rudolf Roese hit a great ball. The second half was just like the first, even and exciting. The match ended in a draw.
