An unexpectedly hard shot by Nicola Léveillé in the 40th minute of play forced єℓє¢тяσ ℓσ¢σѕ's goalkeeper Dan Spiess to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Clemens Albiez's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Dan Spiess read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 42nd minute of play. In the 46th minute of the match, Greg Rohn got a very nice opportunity to score, but Alwin Dubler was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. After the first half SL Benfica were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Clemens Albiez to make the kick off. Raffaele Conti could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 52nd minute of the match, but Dan Spiess made a huge save.
