In the 6th minute, FC Universitatea Craiova's Nistor Ştefulescu seemed to kick out at an opponent. The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed Nistor Ştefulescu the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of FC Universitatea Craiova protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Nistor Ştefulescu had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 5th minute of the game. One of FC Universitatea Craiova:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Petelea:s goal. In the 8th minute there was a penalty for Petelea. Matei Bute stepped forward and shot the ball to the right of a diving Cătălin Zota. 0-1. Cornel Hațegan showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Vintilă Cartiș, who was totally free with the ball in the 10th minute. In the 13thth minute of the game Claudiu Nacu who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but FC Universitatea Craiova's Cătălin Zota was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Damian Pânzariu's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Cornel Hațegan firmly grabbed it by the left post. In the 20th match minute, Petelea was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Ion Caramitru to maneuver through the defense. 22 minutes into the game, Damian Pânzariu recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Cornel Hațegan. Damian Pânzariu showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-1. Damian Pânzariu came free with the goalkeeper in the 26th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Cornel Hațegan could save by the left post. Adrian Ailenei could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 27th minute of the match, but Cornel Hațegan made a huge save. Damian Pânzarius short, quick shot in the 29thth minute got Cornel Hațegan to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. In the 32nd minute, Adrian Ailenei ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Cornel Hațegan was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-1. A collision led to FC Universitatea Craiova getting a freekick after 35 minutes play. Luca Ianculescu hit a great ball. Damian Pânzariu could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 38th minute of the match, but Cornel Hațegan made a huge save. After some careless play in the Petelea defense, Damian Pânzariu kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Cornel Hațegan. The Petelea fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Cornel Hațegan should have stopped the shot. If Codruț Zdrăilă had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 44th minute. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 3-1 at half-time.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Claudiu Nacu to make the kick off. Adrian Ailenei might have been able to make a better finish in the 51st minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Cornel Hațegan. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Adrian Ailenei ran back to his position shaking his head. Traian Mitică kicked well hit freekick during the 53rd minute of the match. 56 minutes into the match, Petelea's goal looked a bit too open when Damian Pânzariu came free, but Cornel Hațegan reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Adrian Ailenei's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Cornel Hațegan read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 57th minute of play. After some careless play in the Petelea defense, Codruț Zdrăilă kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Cornel Hațegan. The Petelea fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Cornel Hațegan should have stopped the shot. After having played for 66 minutes, Adrian Ailenei managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. FC Universitatea Craiova's supporters crossed their fingers, but Adrian Ailenei was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Cornel Hațegan took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Adrian Ailenei, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 76th minute Silviu Popic suffered a thigh injury and had to be helped off the field. 76 minutes into the game, Traian Mitică was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Petelea's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave FC Universitatea Craiova the free kick. Traian Mitică kicked well hit freekick during the 77th minute of the match. Adrian Ailenei struck a weak shot in the 78th minute. Cornel Hațegan didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for FC Universitatea Craiova. The supporters of FC Universitatea Craiova booed when Petelea was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 82 match minutes in a wonderful position. Claudiu Nacu didn't get a good kick on the ball. When Valer Micu fell near the penalty area in the 83rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Petelea's protests and gave Valer Micu a yellow card for diving instead. If Anton Stănoiu had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 85th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Petelea's Cornel Hațegan played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Adrian Ailenei in the 89th minute of play. FC Universitatea Craiova walked away with a well-earned victory that was much celebrated by the crowd.
