Atherton's Luke Veitch played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Everett Kinsey in the 20th minute of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Eden Cubitt got free with Carl Krause in the 24th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 28th minute the ball was on its way in behind Kainton's goalkeeper Carl Krause, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. The attack was good, but when Everett Kinsey in the 55th minute was about to shoot he didn't kick quite good enough and the ball went high over goal. 56 minutes into the match, Atherton's goal looked a bit too open when Stan Johnson came free, but Luke Veitch reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Stan Johnson blasted a shot towards the goal in the 58th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Luke Veitch having to make a save. Gregg Jeavons scored 1-1 in the 67th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Carl Krause, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. The supporters of Kainton booed when Atherton was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 71 match minutes in a wonderful position. Benny Twite didn't get a good kick on the ball. The audience was convinced that Eden Cubitt's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Carl Krause was relentless in the 76th minute of the game. Everett Kinsey received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 96th minute. Luke Veitch tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. For all the effort they put into the match, the Kainton players left disappointed. They had fought hard, but couldn't break down the home team's defense. The match ended in a win for Atherton.
