After 23 played minutes Melbourne 1980 got a freekick which was hit by Dalton Pinhey. Bleyd Hamilton took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 25th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Christian Tout. Melbourne 1980's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Through an outstanding action, after 34 minutes, Danny Devere successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. In the 39th minute of the game Boyce Worsley made a throw-in which Alex Kinsey played forward. Danny Devere showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Richard Hinwood in the 41st minute of the match. Inter Wodonga's Biggs Perandis got a good chance for a goal in the 43rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Christian Tout took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Alex Kinsey, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. If Richard Hinwood had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 47th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After the first half Inter Wodonga were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Alex Kinsey to strike the kick off in the second half. 53 minutes into the match, Melbourne 1980's Richard Hinwood sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Danny Devere narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Christian Tout made a fantastic save in the 66th minute, when Alex Kinsey sent off a good shot on target. Melbourne 1980's Christian Tout played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bleyd Hamilton in the 73rd minute of play. After 75 minutes of play, Inter Wodonga's Biggs Perandis made it 1-4 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Christian Tout was left in no man's land by his defense there! If Richard Hinwood had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 84th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Ike Obrien's late challenge caught a Inter Wodonga's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Ike Obrien helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Melbourne 1980's Ike Obrien got a free kick in the 89th minute. Christian Tout acted impressively in front of the goal and made a superb save when he, in the 90th minute, took the ball on the long shot from Jessop Cubit. After 96 minutes, Bartholemew Munday mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Melbourne 1980 and the Inter Wodonga players grew even worse after the yellow card.
