The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Leonard Winszman made in the 6th minute of the game a sloppy throw-in which Aad Aab however managed to control. A throw-in in the 10th minute of the game was made by Leonard Winszman with Lech Pisarcik as target, who quickly passed the ball forward. An unexpectedly hard shot by Damazy Joks in the 11th minute of play forced Italy's goalkeeper Bruno Antognoni to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Leonard Winszman made in the 13th minute of the game a sloppy throw-in which Aad Aab however managed to control. Lech Pisarcik recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 17th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Leonard Winszman made in the 18th minute of the game a sloppy throw-in which Aad Aab however managed to control. Zachariasz Dudkowski made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Oliver Bierhoff in the 20th minute of play. Zachariasz Dudkowski showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Oliver Bierhoff, who was totally free with the ball in the 21st minute. In the 22nd match minute, Italy was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Alberto Sforza to maneuver through the defense. Lech Pisarcik received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 25th minute. Bruno Antognoni tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Bruno Antognoni showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Damazy Joks, who was totally free with the ball in the 27th minute. The crowd rose to their feet as Italy's Oliver Bierhoff slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Zachariasz Dudkowski. That made the score 2-0 after 29 minutes of play. Oliver Bierhoff scored 3-0 in the 33rd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Zachariasz Dudkowski, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. 36 minutes into the match, Poland's Lech Pisarcik sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Bruno Antognoni narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Leonard Winszman got a throw-in 38 minutes in the game and the ball was received by Gustaw Komornicki. Poland's Zachariasz Dudkowski played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Oliver Bierhoff in the 40th minute of play. Bruno Antognoni took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Lech Pisarcik, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 3-0 at half-time.

A collision led to Poland getting a freekick after 52 minutes play. Leonard Winszman hit a great ball. Italy's Bruno Antognoni proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 55th minute of the match, managed to save Italy from getting a goal against them. Oliver Bierhoff's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Zachariasz Dudkowski read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 58th minute of play. Damazy Joks received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 63rd minute. Bruno Antognoni tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. A collision led to Poland getting a freekick after 66 minutes play. Florian Pruss hit a great ball. Italy's Fortunato Froněk was substituted for Donato Zoccolo. Poland made a substitution. Tymoteusz Jajko replaced Lech Pisarcik. Italy's Eugenio Lalli was substituted for Dino Grilli. After a rather tough play, Poland's Florian Pruss got a free kick in the 67th minute. After 68 played minutes, Italy's Bruno Faccio shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Zachariasz Dudkowski came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Italy reached it. Bruno Antognoni made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Tymoteusz Jajko in the 74th minute of play. A nice corner shot did that Aad Aab got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Bruno Antognoni quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. Damian Majewski received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Bruno Antognoni came out and tried to block the shot, but Damian Majewski slotted it home off the left post making it 3-1 in the 79th minute. Bruno Antognoni made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Tymoteusz Jajko in the 82nd minute of play. After 86 played minutes Poland got a freekick which was hit by Bernard Chludzinski. Poland's supporters were dissatisfied at the end of the match because Italy had won, even though Poland had held more of the ball.
