Rene Higuita was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. 8 minutes into the match, Colombia's Radamel-Falcao García sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Johnny Ibarra narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Ecuador's goalkeeper couldn't reach when Radamel-Falcao García 10 minutes into the game got a good kick on the ball which found its way into goal just inside left pole. 1-1. Rene Higuita showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Maximiliano Vime, who was totally free with the ball in the 19th minute. In the 29th minute Jose-Antonio Capon shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Johnny Ibarra saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 31 minutes had been played when some careless play by Ecuador's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Christian Castrejana was slow to take the kick. During this time Colombia's players had a chance to rest. The corner led Colombia's Christian Castrejana to fire away a dangerous shot which Johnny Ibarra despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Johnny Ibarra showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jose-Antonio Capon in the 34th minute of the match. In the 35thth minute of the game Radamel-Falcao García who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Ecuador's Johnny Ibarra was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After some careless play in the Ecuador defense, Jose-Antonio Capon kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Johnny Ibarra. The Ecuador fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Johnny Ibarra should have stopped the shot. Radamel-Falcao García's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Johnny Ibarra read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 46th minute of play. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-1.

Lorenzo Acutain received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 58th minute. Rene Higuita tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Ecuador made a substitution. Urki Regalado replaced Lorenzo Acutain. Colombia made a substitution. Kazuo Koriotto replaced Radamel-Falcao García. In the 70th minute Colombia were awarded a corner. Christian Castrejana went to the cornerflag to take it. Rene Higuita made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Maximiliano Vime in the 72nd minute of play. 73 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Kazuo Koriotto came free, but Johnny Ibarra reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Urki Regalado in the 77th minute of play forced Colombia's goalkeeper Rene Higuita to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After 80 played minutes Colombia got a freekick which was hit by Jose-Antonio Capon. A hard shot 86 in the game by Urki Regalado from a close distance when the talented Rene Higuita managed to make a qualified save. Colombia's players were relieved. In the 89th minute Kazuo Koriotto shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Johnny Ibarra saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The audience was convinced that Kazuo Koriotto's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Johnny Ibarra was relentless in the 94th minute of the game.
