USA's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Rex Hathaway in the 35th minute. With his leg Lyle Flanagan managed to avoid a goal in the 40thth minute, when Chile's Adalberto Velarde fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. The supporters of Chile booed when USA was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 68 match minutes in a wonderful position. Arin Babayants didn't get a good kick on the ball. 74 minutes had been played when some careless play by USA's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Eustacio Antonucci received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 84th minute. Lyle Flanagan tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Rubén Martínez in the 88th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Lyle Flanagan prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Chile's Batista Maige played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Vern Meza in the 93rd minute of play. After 94 minutes Chile's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Stevie Thomas who took care of the corner kick.
