Santos Granda was slow to take the kick. During this time Venezuela's players had a chance to rest. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Karl Popper stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. After 55 played minutes Venezuela got a freekick which was hit by Bernaldo Bolimburu. An unexpectedly hard shot by Santos Granda in the 66th minute of play forced Luxembourg's goalkeeper Franck Bodenschatz to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 69th minute Jean-Claude Bauschinger shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Mikhail Tal saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Through an outstanding action, after 70 minutes, Mikhail Tal successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post.
