Belgium's Steffen De Coster played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Herbert Staal in the 28th minute of play. In the 30th minute, Bruno Harmsen made a precise shot to the right of Steffen De Coster. Belgium's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 2-1. In the 34thth minute of the game Tommy Verheijden who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Netherlands's Hendrik-Jan Heesen was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. 35 minutes into the match, Hubert Smekens had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Hendrik-Jan Heesen. Netherlands's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Hubert Smekens was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 3-1. Steffen De Coster took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Klaas Saelman, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Netherlands were awarded a corner in the 46th minute after Belgium's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Bruno Harmsen took the corner. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 3-1.

The wind increased when Tommy Verheijden made the kick off in the second half. A sloppy throw-in by Geert Arend Melis in the 51st minute of the game went astray and was snapped up by Belgium's Ferdinand Bernage. In the 52nd minute Hubert Smekens shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Hendrik-Jan Heesen saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Despite this Hendrik-Jan Heesen quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. Hendrik-Jan Heesen showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Tommy Verheijden, who was totally free with the ball in the 89th minute. In the 92ndth minute of the game Hubert Smekens who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Netherlands's Hendrik-Jan Heesen was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. The supporters of Netherlands booed when Belgium was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 94 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hubert Smekens didn't get a good kick on the ball.
