In the 3rd minute, Portugal's André Vale dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 1-0. In the 8th minute Camillo Giannico shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but André Porto saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. André Porto took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Gheorghe Hagi, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The supporters of Italy booed when Portugal was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 22 match minutes in a wonderful position. António Domingues didn't get a good kick on the ball. Fethi Tanto showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from André Vale in the 26th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gheorghe Hagi in the 30th minute of play forced Portugal's goalkeeper André Porto to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Camillo Giannico in the 31st minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck André Porto prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Fethi Tanto made an important save on a dangerous shot by José Correia in the 34th minute. 34 minutes into the match, Italy's goalkeeper Fethi Tanto had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by José Correia. 35 minutes into the match, Italy's goal looked a bit too open when Júlio Lopes came free, but Fethi Tanto reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. André Porto showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Gheorghe Hagi in the 36th minute of the match. Portugal's André Porto played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Gheorghe Hagi in the 40th minute of play. Amadeu Guarda struck a weak shot in the 44th minute. Fethi Tanto didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Portugal. André Vale might have been able to make a better finish in the 45th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Fethi Tanto. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. André Vale ran back to his position shaking his head. Fethi Tanto showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Júlio Lopes, who was totally free with the ball in the 46th minute. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.
The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Gheorghe Hagi stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. 56 minutes into the match, Júlio Lopes notched a goal, 2-0, to the right of Italy's Fethi Tanto. Fethi Tanto was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Fethi Tanto showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Júlio Lopes in the 59th minute of the match. In the 61st minute, Federico Allegretti left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Italy fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-1. Italy's Alfonso De Sanctis was substituted for Federico Allegretti. After a rather tough play, Italy's Alfonso De Sanctis got a free kick in the 76th minute. The audience thought a goal was coming when Hernán Crespo got free with André Porto in the 78th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Fethi Tanto didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang went, in the 82nd minute, to the upper right corner, 4-1 was the resulting score. Portugal's defense didn't have a chance, in the 85th minute, when Hernán Crespo scored to the left of an out of position André Porto, making the score, 4-2. In the 88th minute, Beppe Ferraro got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Beppe Ferraro could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 90th minute of the match, but André Porto made a huge save. Fethi Tanto made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 91st minute of play. 93 minutes into the match, Italy's goal looked a bit too open when Jorge Daniel came free, but Fethi Tanto reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. With a little luck, Portugal's André Porto got control of the ball when Hernán Crespo tried to sneak it across the goal line.
