Toby McGuire made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ismael Robles in the 11th minute of play. 12 minutes into the match, Ian Smith notched a goal, 0-1, to the right of U21 United States's Toby McGuire. Toby McGuire was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ian Smith in the 15th minute of play forced U21 United States's goalkeeper Toby McGuire to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Kazimierz Deyna fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 16th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Minor Alpizar having to interfere. In the 20th minute the ball was on its way in behind U21 United States's goalkeeper Toby McGuire, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. U21 Costa Rica's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Manuel Villareal in the 21st minute. A nice corner shot did that Manuel Villareal got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Toby McGuire quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. Toby McGuire stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Ismael Robles's shot from short distance in the 24th minute. The supporters of U21 Costa Rica booed when U21 United States was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 26 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jospeh Addison didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a rather tough play, U21 Costa Rica's Manuel Villareal got a free kick in the 33rd minute. In the 38th match minute, U21 United States was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Darren Driver to maneuver through the defense. U21 United States's Toby McGuire played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ian Smith in the 42nd minute of play. Shannon Ross hit a great freekick 45 minutes into the match. The crowd rose to their feet as Shannon Ross kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Minor Alpizar. That made the score 1-1 in the 47 minute of play. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Ismael Robles stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. In the 54th minute, Emmitt Denton made a precise shot to the right of Minor Alpizar. U21 Costa Rica's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 2-1. 60 minutes into the match, U21 Costa Rica's goal looked a bit too open when Kazimierz Deyna came free, but Minor Alpizar reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Shannon Ross in the 61st minute of play forced U21 Costa Rica's goalkeeper Minor Alpizar to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Minor Alpizar came out of the goal in the 61st minute to try and stop a shot by U21 United States's Shannon Ross. But to his dismay, Shannon Ross quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 3-1. U21 Costa Rica made a substitution. Jason Ulloa replaced Estacio Nes. U21 United States's Rene Becerra was substituted for Waldo Abel. After having played for 67 minutes, Ismael Robles managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. U21 Costa Rica's supporters crossed their fingers, but Ismael Robles was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. U21 United States made a substitution. Angelo LeBlanc replaced Darren Driver. Minor Alpizar took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Kazimierz Deyna, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 71st minute, Kazimierz Deyna made a precise shot to the right of Minor Alpizar. U21 Costa Rica's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 4-1. U21 Costa Rica's Minor Alpizar played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Kazimierz Deyna in the 74th minute of play. In the 74th minute, Diego Forlan hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After 85 minutes of play, U21 United States's Rene Becerra made it 5-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Minor Alpizar was left in no man's land by his defense there! U21 Costa Rica's Minor Alpizar played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Rene Becerra in the 88th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ian Smith in the 90th minute of play forced U21 United States's goalkeeper Toby McGuire to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 92 minutes into the game, Kazimierz Deyna cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 6-1. Minor Alpizar was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. U21 Costa Rica's Minor Alpizar played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Rene Becerra in the 95th minute of play. In the 96th minute, Angelo LeBlanc hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. U21 United States's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
