The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. In the 2nd match minute, Costa Rica was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Rolando Fonseca to maneuver through the defense. In the 9th minute, Canada's Humberto Velasquez dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 1-0. 12 minutes into the match, Canada's Humberto Velasquez sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Herberto Obando narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Humberto Velasquez could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 14th minute of the match, but Herberto Obando made a huge save. Canada's Troy Holmes was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Herberto Obando in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. The crowd rose to their feet as Canada's Maurice Couturier slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Herberto Obando. That made the score 2-0 after 19 minutes of play. The audience was convinced that Claudio Cordero's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Enrique Frederick was relentless in the 22nd minute of the game. In the 24th minute Humberto Velasquez shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Herberto Obando saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 29th minute, Claude Duhamel hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Herberto Obando came out of the goal in the 40th minute to try and stop a shot by Canada's Humberto Velasquez. But to his dismay, Humberto Velasquez quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 3-0. In the 47th minute, David Lopez hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Claudio Cordero stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. If Brad Francis had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 52nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Humberto Velasquez struck a weak shot in the 54th minute. Herberto Obando didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Canada. Herberto Obando made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Humberto Velasquez in the 56th minute of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Rolando Fonseca got free with Enrique Frederick in the 58th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Fatsali Bedirhan during the 59th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. In a very dangerous position, a player in Canada fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 59th minute. Penalty! Claudio Cordero walked up to take care of the penalty kick. He was aiming for the top corner, but the ball went just outside the post. Canada's Tyson Forrest was substituted for Claude Duhamel. Kosan Kosa charged in rather forcefully in the 65th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Kosan Kosa the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by David Lopez during the 66th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 66 played minutes Costa Rica got a freekick which was hit by David Lopez. A collision led to Costa Rica getting a freekick after 67 minutes play. David Lopez hit a great ball. Costa Rica:s Herberto Obando showed great skill when he stopped Donny Lujan:s penalty. Enrique Frederick took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Bryan Ruiz, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. If Neymar Barčas had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 73rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Neymar Barčas in the 75th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Herberto Obando prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Herberto Obando showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Neymar Barčas in the 77th minute of the match. Herberto Obando came out of the goal in the 78th minute to try and stop a shot by Canada's Neymar Barčas. But to his dismay, Neymar Barčas quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 4-0. 83 minutes into the match, Canada's goalkeeper Enrique Frederick had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Gilberto Flores. 87 minutes into the match, Bryan Ruiz had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Enrique Frederick. Canada's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Bryan Ruiz was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 4-1. In the 90th minute, Costa Rica's Gilberto Flores dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 4-2. 95 minutes into the match, Costa Rica's goal looked a bit too open when Neymar Barčas came free, but Herberto Obando reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Costa Rica's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
