Gianluigi Buffon showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Jose Mendez, who was totally free with the ball in the 14th minute. 18 minutes into the match, Costa Rica's goal looked a bit too open when Franz-Josef Honigman came free, but Herberto Obando reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When Franz-Josef Honigman came up free with the goalie in the 21st minute, the Switzerland fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Franz-Josef Honigman couldn't finish the play. Pascual Navarro kicked well hit freekick during the 42nd minute of the match. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Joseph Gygax to strike the kick off in the second half. Gianluigi Buffon didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Arsenio Paniagua went, in the 77th minute, to the upper right corner, 3-0 was the resulting score. 82 minutes into the game, Costa Rica's Jose Mendez nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Gianluigi Buffon made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 4-0. After a defensive mix-up in Costa Rica's zone, Arnold Bollier stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Herberto Obando came out of the goal and Arnold Bollier tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Gianluigi Buffon took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Pancho Vanderlat, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 94 minutes, Arsenio Paniagua made it 5-0 with a short kick to the right side. Switzerland's Gianluigi Buffon tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. There were very few away supporters still in the ground by the end of the match. Most of them had left early, disgusted by the way their team had been torn apart. Costa Rica fully deserved thier win.
