I can't believe the people are still there. They should have been been and gone by now

"But where can we go?!! WHERE DO THEY THINK WE CAN GO!?!"

Oh I don't know, Ireland? Maybe they could build you a nice big site in Ireland. Cheerio.

I quite favour confiscation and subsequent destruction of all vehicles found on site and use of whatever force proves necessary to remove the people. How far "human rights" can ever be respected depends on if and how far those humans are engaged in illegal activity. Any vehicles that voluntarily move off-site, take down the numbers, if the same are found illegally occupying anywhere else in future, confiscated and crushed as and when.

No sympathy WHATSOEVER for the travelers here. ("We'll go for £6m, best wishes...")

the only thing that i cant get a grasp of is that this seems to be a settlement that has been establishing and growing over a period of time, some body must have been aware of its development and are you telling me that this settlement grew without the council knowing that any illegal acts were taking place, i would not be surprised if that indeed was the case, in fact i would not be surprised if the council would have actually allowed it to stay if they had not had to act on complainants demands, i think everyone is a victim here both the complainants who have probably been feeling let down for a long time and also the travellers, who probably thought they had found somewhere they could stay, i havent been glued to the situation so i am only following a hunch, but my hunch is that it is the authorities who have let everybody down and extra time for everyone to move off makes sense..
the other thing that is ringing a bell with me is the law regarding protest camps like the greenham common women etc, how come they get allowed to stay on these sites, where exactly does the law stand..

Adverse possession, huhn?

heddo, are you suggesting that someone in government was getting a cut of some illegal dealings? for shame man, you ought to know such things never happen! There is no reason to believe that favors and/or blackmarket goods and/or prostitution would ever have anything to do with a government officer breaking his oath.

But really, the news keep calling these people "travelers", are these Roma?

Who claims original ownership of the property and what do they want to do with it?

They're basically Irish, by ancestry if not by both birthplace and ancestry. Hence the suggestion they could perhaps go to Ireland and/or the Irish authorities should be providing sites for them there, if they should be having sites provided for them anywhere.

Thank you for that.
I have not answered who owns the land, and why these people are there in the first place? There is little about them on the web.

Re: Dale eviction delayed

there is a legal settlement with planning permission from the council to have the land to dwell on, but the settlement grew onto illegitimate territory, so the ones on the illegal unapplied plot have to leave, they are travellers/gypsies in mobile homes, the only reason they are called travellers is because thier homes are mobile, it is quite common for these people to be asked to move from areas as they are deemed undesirable in most quarters..

The travellers own the land. Why shouldn't they be there?
Basildon Council could have intervened in the original sale, maybe even bought the site themselves if they weren't keen on having such a community within their territory. Instead they have spent £18m on the legal and logistical actions they have taken since.
I'd be livid if it were my council tax being haemorrhaged on this crusade.

It was well established as green belt land, the owner was lucky to receive permission to construct or take up residence on any of it. On the (large) area were there was no permission, they went ahead anyway. The cliche applies: "Give an inch and they take a mile". Also, what message would it send to others, gypsies/travelers or whoever else. This sort of contention should be for brown belt sites, never green belt. Basildon council has a poor history with protection of green belt, which probably, and understandably, makes them more determined than usual in such a significant case (both in terms of land and in terms of profile).

I'd be livid with the travelers if it was my money more directly paying for the legal action. A price can't be put on enforcing the law or indeed, as I'd see it in this situation, basic justice. The cost is lamentable, the action had to be taken.
