Sammy Medrano came out of the goal in the 3rd minute to try and stop a shot by U21 Brazil's Fábio Lopez. But to his dismay, Fábio Lopez quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. The supporters of U21 Brazil booed when U21 United States was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 6 match minutes in a wonderful position. Reyes Chan didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 7th minute the ball was on its way in behind U21 United States's goalkeeper Sammy Medrano, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Sammy Medrano came out of the goal in the 10th minute to try and stop a shot by U21 Brazil's Nelsinho Gaúcho. But to his dismay, Nelsinho Gaúcho quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-2. Alan Loyola made an important save on a dangerous shot by Pablo Coronado in the 17th minute. In the 18th match minute, U21 Brazil was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Vitório Salgado to maneuver through the defense. Sammy Medrano took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Fábio Lopez, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 23 minutes into the match, U21 United States's goal looked a bit too open when Nelsinho Gaúcho came free, but Sammy Medrano reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 24 played minutes U21 United States got a freekick which was hit by Tommie Coffey. 27 minutes into the match, U21 United States's goal looked a bit too open when Fábio Lopez came free, but Sammy Medrano reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Alan Loyola was a little too slow when Pablo Coronado got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 28th minute. The score was now 1-2. If Reuben Trotter had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 30th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 36 minutes into the match, U21 United States's goal looked a bit too open when Nelsinho Gaúcho came free, but Sammy Medrano reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. U21 Brazil's Ernesto Batista quite brazenly broke a throw-in by Lincoln Frederick, made in the 42nd minute of the game. Sammy Medrano took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Nelsinho Gaúcho, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 43rd match minute, U21 Brazil was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Vitório Salgado to maneuver through the defense. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 1-2.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Nelsinho Gaúcho was the one to do the kick off. Arturo Gallo hit a great freekick 55 minutes into the match. U21 United States's Sammy Medrano proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 57th minute of the match, managed to save U21 United States from getting a goal against them. In the 59th minute, Nelsinho Gaúcho left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The U21 Brazil fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-3. U21 Brazil made a substitution. Caco Pontes replaced Cristian Matorin. In the 66th minute Válter Valadares shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sammy Medrano saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Alan Loyola made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Pablo Coronado in the 70th minute of play. With his leg Sammy Medrano managed to avoid a goal in the 72ndth minute, when U21 Brazil's Nelsinho Gaúcho fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. U21 United States's Sammy Medrano played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Vitório Salgado in the 75th minute of play. Sammy Medrano showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Válter Valadares in the 81st minute of the match. Oscar Bernardi kicked well hit freekick during the 82nd minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Reuben Trotter in the 84th minute of play forced U21 Brazil's goalkeeper Alan Loyola to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. With an all-out effort, U21 Brazil's Sammy Medrano threw himself towards the right post 86 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Válter Valadares, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Sammy Medrano showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Válter Valadares, who was totally free with the ball in the 87th minute. U21 Brazil were awarded a corner in the 88th minute after U21 United States's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Vitório Salgado took the corner. It was a well-played corner which Válter Valadares managed to volley towards the net. Unfortunately, he didn't get a great hit on the ball and it went out into the grandstand. In the 91st minute Válter Valadares shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sammy Medrano saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. U21 Brazil made a substitution. Kléber Sarmento replaced Nelsinho Gaúcho. U21 Brazil's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Vitório Salgado in the 94th minute. It was a well-played corner which Válter Valadares managed to volley towards the net. Unfortunately, he didn't get a great hit on the ball and it went out into the grandstand. The audience thought a goal was coming when Kléber Sarmento got free with Sammy Medrano in the 97th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort.
The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched U21 Brazil eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
