After 9 minutes Canada's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Santiago Umaña who took care of the corner kick. The supporters of Canada booed when Costa Rica was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 9 match minutes in a wonderful position. Claudio Cordero didn't get a good kick on the ball. Canada's Edgar Fair played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Alan Cordoba in the 12th minute of play. Odilon Baxter in the 13thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Herberto Obando, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. An unexpected shot in the 15th minute by Sheldon Hébert got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. Sheldon Hébert received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 23rd minute. Herberto Obando tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The audience was convinced that Odilon Baxter's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Herberto Obando was relentless in the 36th minute of the game. Canada's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Kosan Kosa in the 38th minute. Edgar Fair made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Claudio Cordero in the 60th minute of play. In the 61st minute, Odilon Baxter got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. With an all-out effort, Costa Rica's Edgar Fair threw himself towards the right post 64 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Claudio Cordero, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. In the 65th minute of the match Costa Rica got a corner. Canada's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Herberto Obando prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Edgar Fair made an important save on a dangerous shot by Diego Quesada in the 76th minute. After some fancy dribbling in the 78th minute, Abelardo Hidalgo managed to get in a good position for a shot. Costa Rica's supporters rose to their feet, but Abelardo Hidalgo was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Edgar Fair breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Costa Rica made a substitution. Heriberto Chinchilla replaced Diego Quesada. Edgar Fair showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Claudio Cordero in the 85th minute of the match. In the 87th minute, Arsenio Paniagua ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Edgar Fair was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-2. Elias Saborio fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 91st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Edgar Fair having to interfere. A hard shot 94 in the game by Heriberto Chinchilla from a close distance when the talented Edgar Fair managed to make a qualified save. Canada's players were relieved. In the 96th minute Odilon Baxter shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Herberto Obando saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 97th match minute, Canada was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Robert Donovan to maneuver through the defense. The Costa Rica supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Costa Rica would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
