But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Ştefan Lupea couldn't finish the play. U21 Romania's Eric Neacșu played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Sebastian Kluge in the 19th minute of play. In the 21st minute Sebastian Kluge shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Eric Neacșu saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Eric Neacșu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Sebastian Kluge in the 21st minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gabe Batistuta in the 25th minute of play forced U21 Romania's goalkeeper Eric Neacșu to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 30 minutes into the match, U21 Romania's goalkeeper Eric Neacșu had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Sebastian Kluge. The audience thought a goal was coming when Sebastian Kluge got free with Eric Neacșu in the 32nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Dominik Puzio hit a great freekick 38 minutes into the match. Ionică Săceanu fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 39th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Sylwester Koziol having to interfere. Ionică Săceanu struck a weak shot in the 40th minute. Sylwester Koziol didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for U21 Romania. After 43 played minutes U21 Romania got a freekick which was hit by Fabian Vătafu. In the 45th minute, Marcin Grondzki hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After a defensive mix-up in U21 Poland's zone, Ionică Săceanu stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Sylwester Koziol came out of the goal and Ionică Săceanu tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Ionică Săceanu made a kick off. Eric Neacșu came out of the goal in the 52nd minute to try and stop a shot by U21 Poland's Sebastian Kluge. But to his dismay, Sebastian Kluge quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-1. After 57 minutes U21 Poland's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Stelian Cojocaru who took care of the corner kick. The corner led to U21 Romania's Moise Zafiu getting away a dangerous shot that went just outside the goal. Sebastian Kluge might have been able to make a better finish in the 62nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Eric Neacșu. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Sebastian Kluge ran back to his position shaking his head. U21 Romania's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
