An unexpectedly hard shot by Vélaugur Óskarsson in the 30th minute of play forced Angola's goalkeeper Pompílio Rebello to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Pompílio Rebello made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Austmar Hjaltason in the 33rd minute of play. If Edmundo Fontão had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 40th minute, Flavio Polido hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After 41 played minutes Iceland got a freekick which was hit by Kristinn Ingimundarson. Edmundo Fontão sent away a hard shot on goal in the 46th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Pompílio Rebello showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Allan Þrándsson, who was totally free with the ball in the 51st minute. Viveque Caneças sent away a hard shot on goal in the 76th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. It was no surprise that this one had ended in a win for the home team. Iceland had played much better football throughout.
