An unexpectedly hard shot by Zulkarnaen Mandaga in the 7th minute of play forced Latvia's goalkeeper Valdis Felbergs to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After having played for 8 minutes, Zulkarnaen Mandaga managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Indonesia's supporters crossed their fingers, but Zulkarnaen Mandaga was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jānis Blūms in the 10th minute of play forced Indonesia's goalkeeper Haji Sarap to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 12th minute, Zulkarnaen Mandaga left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Indonesia fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. In the 15th minute Zulkarnaen Mandaga shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Valdis Felbergs saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 17 minutes into the match, Indonesia's goalkeeper Haji Sarap had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Modris Pavējš. Haji Sarap made a fantastic save in the 19th minute, when Modris Pavējš sent off a good shot on target. With an all-out effort, Latvia's Haji Sarap threw himself towards the right post 20 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Knuts Plekss, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Valdis Felbergs made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Zulkarnaen Mandaga in the 21st minute of play. Haji Sarap made an important save on a dangerous shot by Jānis Blūms in the 22nd minute. 31 minutes into the game, Zulkarnaen Mandaga cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-2. Valdis Felbergs was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. If Zulkarnaen Mandaga had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 34th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Knuts Plekss's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Haji Sarap read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 43rd minute of play. After 92 minutes, Eddy Ginanjar mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Indonesia and the Latvia players grew even worse after the yellow card. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched Indonesia eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
